The Condition of Used Books

In describing our second-hand books, we often use standard terms to indicate the general condition of the book.

We try to use generally accepted terms that mean the same to booksellers and collectors the world over, and these are detailed below.

If the book is a hardcover with a dustjacket, two conditions may be listed - the first for the book, the second for its cover.

Please email us for detailed discussion of any specific item you might be interested in, if you have concerns about its condition.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Very Fine - VF

We only use this for books that are absolutely pristine with no faults at all, however minor. Many brand new books in bookshops aren't this perfect.

Fine - F

A fine copy is free from obvious faults. Not absolutely perfect - it can show signs of its age, or of having been owned. A Fine book will be clean, tightly bound and square. A Fine dust jacket will be free from loss or tears, or any real faults or blemishes. A previous owner's name may be inscribed, though this would always be noted.

Near Fine - NF

A book or cover that does not quite meet the exacting standards of "Fine". The reason why it is not fine will be specifically stated, but this will still be a very nice copy.

Very Good - VG

Basically, the condition a collector might generally expect to find second-hand books in. A book will clearly have been read and handled, dust jackets may show some loss, tears and wear. Faults will be mentioned specifically, such as inscription stamps, chipping and tears to the jacket.

Good - G

A copy that is still complete and readable, but is not usually a collector's copy (unless the book is rare). There will be significant faults, which we will detail in our description.

Fair, Poor, Reading Copy

You won't find these descriptions on our books - we don't sell books in poor condition.

Additional Notes

Price Clipped-Clipping - We will always note if a price has been clipped from a dust jacket.

Names, Inscriptions, Stamps or Remainder Marks - These will always be detailed.

Ex Library - Copies that have been in public libraries will always be noted and well described, due to the likely stamps, pockets, missing endpapers or special library bindings. These are rarely better than "Good" grade.
